Press Release 05-08-08

On Tuesday, May 6, 2008, a bomb threat for this Friday, May 9, 2008, was found in a stall of the Plymouth High School bathroom. High school administration involved Plymouth Police Officer Mark Owens immediately to develop the following plan:

· Our Administration has investigated tapes from security cameras in an attempt to identify the potential suspect(s).
· There was a faculty meeting held on Wednesday evening immediately after school to communicate strategies with the faculty.
· There was a floor to ceiling search of the entire high school on Wednesday after school.
· Since nothing was detected, a communication will be sent home with students on Thursday, May 8, 2008. Mr. Condon read this letter to the students at 10:30 a.m. this morning on the PA.
· If nothing is found through all of these efforts, there will be some changes at the high school on Friday. These changes are addressed in the letter attached from Mr. Condon.

Parents,

We are dealing with an issue that must be taken seriously that I want to make you aware of. On May 6, a bomb threat was reported to the administration. This threat was made in the form of a note placed on a bathroom wall here at school. The note stated that a bomb would go off on Friday at noon. Regardless of whether I feel this threat is credible or not, we must give it our full attention as we always place the safety of everyone attending Plymouth High School as our top priority.

As a faculty, we have worked diligently to search our building to make sure everything is okay. We have also worked in cooperation with the local police department to conduct a complete search of our building and additional searches will continue to take place.

As far as students or parents are concerned, we are asking for your cooperation in this issue in a couple different ways:

If you have any information that may lead us to a potential suspect please bring that forth to a building administrator. You will be rewarded for any information that may help us in our efforts.

On Friday, we ask that students not enter school with any backpacks or large carrying bags. Instead, students are being asked to leave those items at home or in their car. If a need exists to carry a bag or backpack to school it must be related to a physical or medical condition and receive preapproval from a principal.

Beginning on Friday, student access to the building will not be allowed prior to 7:15 A.M.

Student entry into the building will be limited to doors 1 and 5 between 7:15 and the time that busses drop off at PHS. Students riding busses will enter the building as they always have.

Attendance at school on Friday will be optional and will not be held against you if you bring a note from your parent to student services upon your return Monday. We will conduct school as usual Friday and hope that you will join us.

Upon arriving at school Friday, students should expect to see some police officers on campus Friday working in conjunction with the administration to ensure that everything is okay.

Before students leave school today, each of you will receive a letter describing the threat and everything we have done to investigate this issue. Please give this letter to your parents as soon as you get home from school. These letters will be passed out to you today during your 6th period class. If you leave school before the end of the school day, please stop in to the main office and ask for a copy of this letter from Mrs. VanMeter.

Thank you for your cooperation. Please be aware that the safety of your child is our top priority. Feel free to contact me if you have any additional questions or concerns.

Sincerely,

James Condon, Principal
Plymouth High School

Board Meeting of May 1, 2008

The meeting started at 7:00 p.m. Under organization of the meeting, a Pledge of Allegiance was given. Opening and setting the agenda of the meeting continued by looking at the various agenda adjustments as noted. Audience participation was offered, and the minutes of the April 17 regular meeting were approved unanimously. Monthly claims were approved as presented.

Under business transactions, textbook adoption recommendations were presented by
Mr. Tyree. For language arts, he reviewed the composition of committee members, and the Board approved as presented.

Mr. Dunn presented a report on the High Ability/Gifted and Talented Program, extensively discussing the changes that have been made in the past year, making a number of indications of the Plymouth program and where that is going. He answered questions from the Board until all the questions had been answered.

Under report from the maintenance department, in the absence of Mr. Bruce Hite,
Mr. Tyree reviewed the items offered concerning the maintenance program for the summer and indicated those projects which have been completed, those which estimates are currently being sought, and he gave an indication of where we were on those particular projects.

The donation report indicates that from Lincoln Junior High School, a $300 donation was made by Martin Supermarkets, and the board graciously accepted those and requested that thanks be sent to Martin Supermarkets.

Mr. Tyree gave an update concerning the soccer field status, indicating the preparations are in continued process of being met for initiation of that program in the fall.

Affidavits for payment were considered. Affidavit number 54 was approved for the amount of $4,191.40 for a fencing project from the contingency fund. Affidavit number 64 was approved, also from contingency items and technology, in the amount of $123,290.15.

Under superintendent’s remarks, Mr. Tyree offered a review of the fact that Riverside Drama Club is currently conducting a number of drama activities with their students. The high school is making a presentation of Grease this weekend, and it is noted that Plymouth High School is being acknowledged for 100 years of accreditation with the North Central Association this year.

These past months, we have had Principal for a Day, where we have had members of the community into each of our schools spending time with principals, and their participation is very much appreciated.

The next meeting is scheduled for May 15th. Due to a number of school activities, the Board is requesting that that time be changed from 7:00 to 5:00. The meeting will be held at Webster Elementary. There were no other questions at that point, and the meeting was adjourned.

Fortunately, Washington School is keeping the doors open for the children and families who depend on the club, but the club needs your help.

On February 16, 2008, the Boys and Girls Club will hold a benefit to raise money. The benefit will be held at Christos Banquet Center and the theme will be Catch a Wave at the Blue Hawaiian. The silent auction begins at 5:30 p.m., followed by dinner at 6:15 p.m., and a live auction at 8:15 p.m. Finally, you can dance the evening away featuring Master of Ceremonies, Quentin Flagg, and live music by MGB. Tickets are $50.00 each and are only available until February 8, 2008.

Get your tickets or make a donation by sending a check to: Wendy Haenes, Plymouth Community School Corporation, 611 Berkley Street, Plymouth, Indiana 46563. Please make checks payable to: Boys and Girls Club of Marshall County.

Good News to All PCSC Educators

Today, our office received a letter from the Indiana Department of Education informing us that Plymouth Community School Corporation has met all Annual Measurable Achievement Objectives on the Spring 2007 LAS Links exam. Limited English Proficient (LEP) students had to meet or exceed three specific benchmarks to attain this status.

· 57% exceeded state standard scale score points on the LAS Links exam.
· 67% achieved a Level 5 for a second time on the LAS Links exam
· 9% moved from a Level 4 or lower to a Level 5 on the Spring LAS Links exam.

We tip our hats to all teachers who work with the attitude that “all students can learn.” Your hard work and persistence is making a difference. Secondly, we also need to congratulate our Limited English Proficient students. They are attaining an education while working diligently to learn a new language. All of Plymouth needs to be proud of this accomplishment.

At approximately 8:00 a.m., we decided that the roads were clear enough to proceed with school. Nothing appeared on the blog this morning because I did not have the passwords at home. That will be remedied for the future.

Also, for your reference we call WTCA, WNZE, WKVI in Knox, WNDU South Bend channel 16, and WSBT South Bend channel 22 to list delays or cancellations. The PHS Band’s morning rehearsal was cut short today because of an odor that seemed to be the same hydrobromic acid released by Indiana Heat Transfer two weeks ago. The band students were taken inside immediately and all are reported to be fine. We have been in contact with the Plymouth Police Department and IDEM and both are very concerned about this situation. IDEM has ordered Indiana Heat Transfer to install a scrubber that will take care of the problem.

Principals in all other Plymouth Schools will check the air quality before sending their children to recess. If there is a problem, it is easily detected and students will be kept inside. We believe, however, that the traffic pattern of the acid seems to be isolated over Plymouth High School’s north parking lot.

Update

We have recently spoken to Plymouth Police who have informed us that the odor was from Indiana Heat Transfer on West Harrison Street.

Once again, the irritation was from a release of a bromide acid which is a lung and eye irritant but is not toxic.

The Indiana Department of Environmental Management has been notified and is investigating the issue.

At this time, we feel convinced that the air is clean thus allowing schools to have practices and any scheduled games tonight.

Plymouth Schools is very appreciative of the immediate response of the Plymouth Police Department on this situation and their willingness to help us make a decision for the welfare of our students.

About 9:00 a.m. the high school notified the central office that band students were complaining about irritating air quality in the high school’s north parking lot. Parents were notified, the nurse attended to students, and with permission from parents, some students were allowed to go home. The Police Chief, Jim Cox, indicated that a Plymouth factory was emitting a chemical that would only cause irritation of the nose, eyes, and throat. In order to safeguard our students, we are keeping them inside the rest of the day. Chief Cox said a representative of IDEM has been called to investigate the situation.

Board Meeting

The Board of Trustees met in regular session on August 16, 2007. In addition to regular business, the board reviewed the extra-curricular financial reports, heard a report on the opening of school (see below), heard a strategic plan update, and acknowledged student activity requisitions. Upon conclusion of the regular meeting, the board conducted a budget workshop. The advertised levy for calendar year 2008 will be approximately $400,000 smaller than the levy advertised in 2007. This is due to an increase in state aid and miscellaneous revenues. The next board meeting is scheduled for September 6th at 7:00 p.m. At that meeting the board will conduct a hearing on the proposed 2008 Budget, 2008 Capital Projects plan, and 2008 Bus Purchase Plan.

As a young teacher in 1979, I was introduced to Mr. Richard Benefiel. I developed an immediate respect for the man, not because he demanded it, but because of what he stood for. Rigidly organized, a strict disciplinarian, but most importantly his students could play music and the loved every minute of every song. He rarely smiled, but when he did, his students knew that they had played the piece to perfection. From his marching shows at football games, to his jazz bands, and to the Big Red Band Variety Show, everyone in town knew that when Mr. Benefiel took the podium, he stood for excellence.

When I heard that he had passed away, I was deeply saddened. Plymouth has lost one of the finest teachers to have ever graced our classrooms. I'm going to the Variety Show this weekend and had planned to all along. It's what you do in Plymouth on the first weekend in May. And when the overture sounds and the lights come alive, there will be a smile on my face in the back of the darkened house. Not just because my two children are in the show, but the evening promises to bring back great memories of Mr. Richard Benefiel. A good friend, a fine father, and a tremendous teacher. We're going to miss you, Dick. We're going to miss you!

For the 4th year in a row, the Destination Imagination Team from Lincoln Junior High has qualified to compete in the Destination Imagination Global Finals tournament to be held in Knoxville, Tennessee in May. This year’s structural problem is called Card-DI-ology. The students are required to build a structure entirely of glue and cards (from a deck of playing cards). Thus far this year’s structure has held 512 pounds.

Members of the team include Riverside students: Danielle Krou and Adam Kolacz, and Lincoln students: Monica Weaser, Victoria MacLain, Jacob Segraves, Michael Gray, and Cassie Gaines. Managers for this year’s team are: Denise Benczik, Jennie Mikesell, Ryan Benczik, Sarah Benczik, and Steve Benczik.

Congratulations to students and their coaches for a job well done.
