What a Wonderful, Giving Community We Live In!

As we approach the holidays, Plymouth Community School Corporation would like to thank everyone out there who has given their time or dollars to help our schools and our students. During the last few years as money has been tight, our community has continued to support Plymouth Schools. Also, at this time I think it's important to acknowledge how giving our students and staff are to help their fellow students, staff, community, and Hoosiers in need. As of December 18, Plymouth staff and students have given $36,091.26 toward several different local causes. Isn't it a wonderful place to live!

Riverside Ecology Goes Green

The Ecology Club at Riverside Intermediate School continues to Go Green! The fifth and sixth grade members of the club, under the direction of the sponsors, Mrs. Tillie Kain and Mrs. Jill Montgomery, have undertaken a new project in conjunction with a recycling company from southern Indiana. The student members of the club want to purchase benches for the front of the school. These benches would be used by students who get dropped off early in the morning or who are waiting to be picked up after their after school activities. The club did some investigating and found this Indiana company that makes benches by recycling lids from all types of plastic bottles. The cost of the benches is lower if the students collect the plastic lids that will be used to make the benches. Riverside students are asking the community to help them collect plastic lids from milk cartons, water bottles…any type of plastic lid. The students are also collecting old ink jet cartridges and cell phones which can be sold to an electronics recycling company to help cover costs. Thank you in advance for helping Riverside students Go Green! Working together we can make a difference for Planet Earth!

Menominee Elementary - Good News

The National Association of State Title I Director’s Title I Schools Recognition Program for a second year in a row has chosen Menominee Elementary school as one of the schools in the running to represent the state’s Title I schools that have made the most progress in significantly closing the achievement gap between student subgroups.

· Ten schools in the state of Indiana have been identified for site visits based on a review of the following criteria:
· Student Achievement Data (Exemplary Progress);
· Meets or Exceeds Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) 2008-2009 and 2009-2010;
· Poverty Data of 35% or higher;

Menominee’s principal, Mr. Mike Dunn, will undergo a phone interview with the State Title I Director. If the interview goes well, the Title I Director and a few staff members will do an onsite visit at Menominee Elementary School. One school in the state of Indiana will then be chosen as Indiana’s top Title I School. If chosen as the top school, Menominee Elementary School will be recognized at the National Title I Conference which will be held in Tampa, Florida on January 31-Februray 3, 2011.

In the last three years, four Plymouth Elementary Schools have been chosen as a participant in the first part of this process. Menominee and Washington Schools last year made it to the site visit and were recognized as one of the top four Title I schools in the state. Two years ago, Webster Elementary School was chosen Top Title I School in Indiana.

Purdue, school districts get $6.7 million grant to improve science education

Press Release:

September 21, 2010

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Purdue University and four Indiana school districts have received the first three years of a five year $6.7 million National Science Foundation grant to improve science learning in third through sixth grades.

The work will focus on the use of engineering design-based teaching. The concept teaches problem solving in math and science through design projects.

Partnering in the effort are Purdue's colleges of Education, Engineering, Science and Technology, the Discovery Learning Research Center, regional industries, and the Lafayette, Tippecanoe, Taylor Community and Plymouth school corporations.

During the five-year project, engineering, science, technology and education faculty will interact with 200 elementary and intermediate school teachers, 100 student teachers and 5,000 students. In the final year, the project will be expanded to additional school districts.
"The use of engineering design principles to affect how science and math are taught has been demonstrated for higher grad levels," said Keith Bowman, head of the School of Materials Engineering and the project leader. "But it is almost nonexistent in elementary classrooms. With the support of our school corporation partners, we seek to develop a program that will prepare teachers to impact students earlier in their academic development."

Goals of the project are to improve science learning in grades 3-6 through implementation of engineering design, prepare practicing and prospective teachers to use a design-based curriculum, adapt existing materials and tasks and develop new ones where necessary, and provide an understanding of how engineering design is used by teachers to teach science and students to learn science.

"Engineering design-based standards are being adopted across the nation. Within the next year, elementary school science teachers, including those in Indiana, will be required to demonstrate the knowledge, skills and practices needed to teach science through engineering design," said Brenda Capobianco, an associate professor of curriculum and instruction in the College of Education and project co-leader. "Our work will create Indiana's first engineering design-based model for science teacher professional development at both the preservice and inservice levels and an innovative, research-based program for using engineering design-based strategies."

The funding comes through NSF’s Math and Science Partnership program, a research and development effort that supports innovative partnerships to improve K-12 student achievement in mathematics and science.

The Plymouth History Walk will be held at Oakhill Cemetery this Sunday, September 26, 2010, from 4:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. The event is free. The walk will start at the west entrance to the cemetery. PHS student, Christina Green, and grad, John Patrick, will be two of the six actors.

Plymouth's Beta Delta chapter of Tri Kappa sorority carefully researches the lives of Plymouth residents buried in the cemetery and re-enacts their biography for a tour group. Teachers and history lovers will get a lot from the performances. Young people interested in local history, research, the 1800s, and the early 20th century might also enjoy coming.

The Marshall County Historical Museum also sponsors this event -- any free-will donations go to the Marshall County Historical Museum. Tours are about 45 minutes long with the last group going out at 5:20 p.m. Golf cart tours are available for the disabled. This year the entire tour is on the paved walkway.

Core Value #3 High Expectations - Plymouth offers Camp Invention this Summer

Camp Invention, the premier program of Invent Now Kids, is celebrating 20 years of bringing science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) learning to children across the nation. Showing continual growth each year, the program reached more than 65,000 children in 2009 alone.

“For more than 20 years our program has been emphasizing the importance of imagination, creation, and innovation by fostering a healthy scientific curiosity in children that helps them understand that science is everywhere,” says Michael J. Oister, President of Invent Now Kids. “We have been proud to provide motivation to learn, create, and excel – particularly in the critical STEM areas, and look forward to 20 more years of offering these unique educational opportunities,” he says.

With an administration focused on conservation, clean energy, and healthcare, STEM initiatives have become crucial on the national stage. President Obama has launched several nationwide programs to help motivate and encourage students in the STEM areas. "The key to meeting these challenges – to improving our health and well-being, to harnessing clean energy, to protecting our security, and succeeding in the global economy – will be reaffirming and strengthening America’s role as the world’s engine of scientific discovery and technological innovation," says President Obama. "The hard truth is that for decades we’ve been losing ground. One assessment shows American 15-year-olds now rank 21st in science and 25th in math when compared to their peers around the world."

Invent Now Kids curriculum writers and staff members are gearing up for another summer of meeting the nation’s education challenges in STEM areas head on. The Camp Invention program is no ordinary summer camp; it is a program that gives children nationwide the opportunity to learn more about math and science in a fun and supportive environment. Children are immersed in a week long experience, where the fun of imaginative play leads them through inquiry-based activities in STEM areas, as well as in history and the arts.

Renowned for the opportunity it extends to elementary-aged children to explore the unknown, tinker with ideas, and satisfy an innate sense of curiosity, the Camp Invention program has provided a safe, creative outlet for them to experience extended summer learning taught by familiar local educators for more than two decades. Each day, children rotate through five integrated modules that employ creative thinking to solve real-world challenges. Working together, they learn vital 21st century life skills such as problem solving and teamwork through hands-on activities designed to be informative and fun. Since its inception in 1990, Camp Invention, the premier program of the nonprofit Invent Now Kids, has grown to include nearly 1,500 sites in 49 states.

To learn more about the Camp Invention program, which will be offered at Riverside Intermediate School the week of July 19-23, or to learn how to secure your child’s spot in the program, visit www.campinvention.org or call 800.968.4332.

PHS Distinguished Alumni Hall of Fame Award Winner

The 29th Plymouth High School Distinguished Alumni Hall of Fame Award was presented at the Plymouth High School Alumni Banquet held on Friday, June 18th.

Recipient of the award is Michael E. MacLain, Class of 1980.

Michael E. MacLain is an officer in the United States Air Force Nurse Corps. He has been married to his wife Michelle since May of 1990. They have two sons: Eric, born in 1993 and Sean, born in 1995. Michael credits his success to his days at Plymouth High School and the benefit of great leaders he had as a student and as an athlete, strengthened by the love and support from his family and friends for which he is eternally grateful.

Michael was born in Plymouth, Indiana on March 11, 1962 to Hughie and Rose MacLain and was the last of six children to graduate from Plymouth. During his time at P.H.S., he was a member of the 1977 AA State Championship Football Team and was a three sport varsity letter winner in football, wrestling and baseball, receiving First Team All-Conference honors in football and baseball. Michael graduated from Plymouth High School in 1980. He went on to play NCAA Division II football at Franklin College of Indiana and was an integral part in two Heartland Collegiate Conference Championships. He continued his football career at Manchester College where he garnered Most Valuable Player Honors and was named to the NAIA Division II All-American Football Team as a defensive back.

His military career began in January of 1988 when he enlisted in the United States Air Force as a Nurse Corps Medical Technician. He was assigned to Air University Regional Hospital at Maxwell Air Force Base in Montgomery, Alabama and remained stationed there until July 1993.
Returning with his family to Tennessee, Michael enrolled in Lincoln Memorial University’s School of Nursing and graduated in 1996. He worked as an Emergency/Trauma Nurse at East Tennessee Children’s Hospital, Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge Tennessee, and The University of Tennessee’s Medical Center at Knoxville.

One day in September, Michael was working the night shift at the University of Tennessee’s Medical Center when an Air Force recruiter brought in his asthmatic daughter to be seen. Recognizing the “recruiting cookie” from his enlisted days, Michael inquired about Air Force nursing needs, thus setting the wheels in motion for returning to active duty and serving his country in a time of great need.

In November 2001, Michael was commissioned as a Captain in the United States Air Force Nurse Corps. After completing Commissioned Officer Training in January 2002, he was assigned to the Emergency Department at Wright Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton, Ohio. He completed a Critical Care Air Transport Team course in 2003 and was deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom as a member of a three person critical care team in 2004 and 2005. In 2005, he completed the Aeromedical Evacuation Flight Nurse course and was reassigned to the 43rd Aeromedical Evacuation Squadron at Pope Air Force Base in Fayetteville, North Carolina. He was again called to action in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom, Operation Enduring Freedom and the Horn of Africa as the leader of an Aeromedical Evacuation Team in 2006, 2007 and 2008. Michael has logged over 1100 hours, has been involved in over 250 sorties, and has provided outstanding medical care to over one thousand seriously injured or ill military members. In January of 2009, he was appointed as the Flight Commander of Air Crew Training for ninety assigned aircrew members. He was then promoted to the Field Grade Officer Rank of Major in August of 2009.

Previous winners of the award are: Major General Larry N. Tibbets, Class of 1952; James L. Parsons, Class of 1933; Dr. Foster and Louise Link Montgomery, Class of 1930; Commodore Schuyler F. Heim, Class of 1902; Mearl D. Strombeck, Class of 1918; Walter A. Glaub, Class of 1932 and Charles O. Glaub, Class of 1935; Noble E. Kizer, Class of 1919; Lt. Col. Lewis L. Dr. Jay Akridge, Dean of Purdue’s School of Agriculture, took time to meet with Plymouth High School students to discuss opportunities available to them in the Agricultural Sciences. The Agriculture field is ripe with opportunities for students in Food Science, Plant Sciences, Bio-chemical Engineering, Forestry and Land Management, and various aspects of Farm Management and Production Farming. There are more jobs than graduates in most of the programs and this trend is growing, providing a bright future for those who prepare themselves to enter this field.

LJH English Academic Super Bowl Team

First Row: Ellen Smith, David Walsh, John Howard, and Jamie Cook; Second Row: Deborah Anders, Shelby Harrell, John Stillson, and Mr. Boyer

The Lincoln Junior High Academic Super Bowl Team participated in the annual Indiana Academic Competition this past Saturday, and the English team brought home the state title, while the Science team finished 7th in the state.

The English team, including Ellen Smith, Jamie Cook, Deborah Anders, Shelby Harrell, John Howard, David Walsh, and John Stillson, correctly answered 23 out of 25 questions. The questions all pertained to this year’s theme: An American Generation: 1964 – 1980. The team had to read a collection of literature from that era, including, among others, Paul Zindel’s The Pigman and The Effect of Gamma Rays on Man-in-the-Moon Marigolds, Fiddler on the Roof, Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” Speech, “Caged Bird” by Maya Angelou, “Cinderella” by Anne Sexton, and “Rain on the Scarecrow” by John Mellencamp. Not only did the team post the highest score in their state class, but they posted a higher score than all other teams in all four classes.

The Science team, including Kyle Barry, Rachel Hartman, Alex Jeffirs, Savannah Mae, Matt Pearson, and Janessa Salazar correctly answered 16 out of 25 questions. They studied scientific issues, including space and underwater exploration and the development of personal computers, that pertained to the same era in history. Congratulations to our future writers and scientists!

Vote for 5-Star at Lincoln Junior High

As featured on WSBT this morning, you can vote for this program to receive crucial funding with a Pepsi Refresh Everything grant at http://www.fivestarrefresh.com/.

Click the link to http://www.refresheverything.com to vote for the 5-Star program at LJHS.

You can learn more about 5-Star at www.fivestarlife.org. This worthwhile program is currently mentoring students at Lincoln.

Here's what it's not ...
a boring, preachy, predictable program focused on what's wrong with kids today
tough love and scare tactics
a strict curriculum that "mentors" follow like a formula
an after-school quarantine for problem kids

... and what it is
engaging, energizing, interactive events
a face-to-face encounter with your own potential
a way to an alternate reality — one with new purpose and possibilities
a place to build relationships, values, integrity and self-confidence
One-day road trips for fun and inspiration
coaches and volunteers who connect with kids

Project Based Learning

Sixth graders at Riverside celebrated their Science unit on predators with an Earth Day project. The students participated in researching the mustard plant that is taking over plant growth in 30 states. They collaborated with the local park and learned that this plant is choking out other plant growth in our park.

For Earth Day, teams of sixth grade students pulled more than 100 loaded garbage bags of this predator plant out of the local park. This project was sponsored by a grant that teachers Tillie Kain and Sue Turpin obtained and is a featured portion of a national project working to eradicate this plant in 30 states.
