Proposed PCSC Corporation Vision Statement

The Board met in a work session last week to review the mission statement, core values and to craft a vision statement. All administrators, principals, and representatives of the teacher's association were invited to be directly involved in the work session.

Rather that creating a Strategic Plan that collects dust on a shelf, the Plymouth School Board has chosen to plan strategically in order to bring continuous quality improvement to Plymouth Community School Corporation. The first reading of the new Vision Statement was presented at the Board meeting last night. A final version will be voted on during the October 14, 2010 meeting at 7:00 p.m. in the Administration Board Room.

PTV2 Partners with Local Radio

Lincoln's own daily news program, PTV2, can now be heard daily on Plymouth's WTCA, AM1050. Beginning Sept. 14th, a special pod cast of PTV2, with all of Lincoln's latest news & announcements will be heard during WTCA's noon news program. The pod cast will be broadcast daily during the school year, Monday through Thursday.

Pride of Plymouth Band - Results

The Pride of Plymouth Marching Band won the Goshen Invitational this weekend beating Fairfield High School and five other bands. Fairfield is an annual state finalist and this was a huge accomplishment for our students!

Plymouth also won the overall award for "Outstanding Music."

This was the first time in MANY years that the Pride of Plymouth Band completely won a show!

Kelli Hoffman is the new Agriculture Science Teacher for Plymouth High School. She received her Bachelor’s degree from Purdue University. She is currently pursuing her Master’s degree from Purdue University

Kelli is excited to be teaching in Plymouth. She has a love of agriculture and a passion for working with youth. She will use these two qualities to build a strong agricultural science program. Plymouth’s agriculture department has great potential. She is looking forward to finding that potential in each of her students through the classroom and FFA.

Blueberry Parking

For over twenty years, Plymouth High School has partnered with Marshall County Blueberry Festival and the Plymouth Moose to coordinate parking services at the high school's lot.

Parking this year will be Band, Choir, Riverside PTO, Spanish Club, Speech Team, Drama Club, and Broadcasting. For your convenience, weekend parking passes are available at the high school for $10.

Please support Plymouth High School by parking at the high school lot. Reminder - this is the only lot that provides tram passes in and out of the park.

Lincoln 1:1 Computer Program Rollout

Tomorrow, September 1, 2010, Lincoln Junior High School will have the rollout of our 1:1 Computer Program.

LJH has leased notebook computers from Apple so that every student will have access to a computer at school. We believe the program will engage students and help to prepare them for the future.

Students will not be taking the computers home at first, but we hope to make that possible before the school year is over.

Plymouth Community Swim Club Fundraiser

The Blueberry Stomp Pre-Race Pasta Café, Packet Pick up & Fireworks to benefit Plymouth Community Swim Club

A home cooked classic pre-race meal will be prepared exclusively for the 2010 Blueberry Stomp Participants (and their families) on Sunday evening, September 5th from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the Knights of Columbus Hall (604 Columbus Drive, Plymouth, IN 46563). All proceeds from the dinner benefit The Plymouth Community Swim Club. Please call (574) 286-3536 with any questions regarding the Sunday evening pasta café & fireworks.

Kohl's Contest

In celebration of Kohl’s Cares 10th anniversary, Kohl’s is donating $500,000 to 20 schools for a total of $10 million. Help our school win!

The $10 million donation comes from the Kohl’s Cares cause merchandise program, which sells special merchandise, including plush toys and books, and donates 100 percent of the net profit to benefit children’s health and education initiatives nationwide.

Riverside Meet the Teacher Night

Riverside Intermediate School will hold their annual "Meet the Teacher" Night this Thursday, August 26th from 6:30-7:30 P.M. Teachers will give brief meetings about procedures, expectations, homework, and curriculum for their classrooms. The meetings begin at 6:30P.M..

Information will also be available about the 21st Century Scholars program which provides four years of free college/technical school for sixth grade students who qualify for free and reduced lunch.

At least twice a week, and maybe more, we get fliers from community groups that give valuable information for parents and students in our schools.

2010 Elementary Meet the Teacher Night

All elementary schools will be open for a Meet the Teacher night from 5:30 p.m. - 6:30 p.m. on Monday, August 16th.

Students are encouraged to come with their families, find their classrooms, and meet their teachers. Children may also bring their supplies at this time to put in their desks.

2010 Transporation Information

The transportation department of the Plymouth Community School Corporation is excited to share that bus information will be available at the One Stop Registration on August 3, 2010 and August 4, 2010 at Plymouth High School. Each school will have a “STUDENT ROSTER” SHEET with the student’s name, address, phone number with bus number and pick up/drop off times. If no bus number is listed - that student falls within the walking boundary to school.

There are no changes in bus routes and/or bus numbers for this year.

An ALTERNATE BUS PICK UP/DROP OFF form will need to be filled out at time of registration and updated with the transportation department by August 13, 2010. If this changes throughout the year you will need to file a new alternative form.

“Transportation” information is available on the Plymouth Community School website. This website will allow you to type in your address and the “bus stop” with the bus number and an approximate time will be shown. Also listed on the website are the “shuttle buses” that go to each of the schools, the Boys and Girls Club, along with the Webster After School program.

PHS Freshman Welcome Day 2010

This is the third year that Plymouth High School will be offering the “Freshmen Welcome Day” as a freshman transition experience. With the support of our administration, we are offering this opportunity for all incoming freshmen. We believe that it is unquestioned that any freshman participant will have a head start as they enter Plymouth High School. Our research indicates that participants in these types of programs have earned higher grade point averages, been more likely to be involved in extra curricular opportunities, and have had fewer disciplinary situations than those who have not participated. There is no doubt that the experience will be informative and fun. I urge all incoming freshmen to attend our “Freshmen Welcome Day.”

What is it?
Freshmen Welcome Day 2010 is the first step in your orientation to Plymouth High School. It is a one-day orientation day for incoming ninth graders that is led by a staff of Plymouth High School students, teachers and counselors.

What will be accomplished?
You will receive your schedule and have a chance to find your classes
You will receive your locker assignment and have a chance to visit and open your new locker
You will learn how to get around the Plymouth High School building
You will be oriented about important issues by upper class students
You will meet and hear from several teachers and administrators
You will be made aware of the many activities available at Plymouth High School
You will make new friends have fun
Lunch will be provided by our cafeteria staff

Camp Invention

Monte Peden and Forrest Baumgartner explore Life on a New Planet as part of Camp Invention which is occurring at Riverside Intermediate School. Over 150 students are participating in Camp Invention.

Camp Invention, the premier program of Invent Now Kids, is celebrating 20 years of bringing science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) learning to children across the nation. Showing continual growth each year, the program reached more than 65,000 children in 2009 alone.

“For more than 20 years our program has been emphasizing the importance of imagination, creation, and innovation by fostering a healthy scientific curiosity in children that helps them understand that science is everywhere,” says Michael J. Oister, President of Invent Now Kids. “We have been proud to provide motivation to learn, create, and excel – particularly in the critical STEM areas, and look forward to 20 more years of offering these unique educational opportunities,” he says.

With an administration focused on conservation, clean energy, and healthcare, STEM initiatives have become crucial on the national stage. President Obama has launched several nationwide programs to help motivate and encourage students in the STEM areas. Invent Now Kids curriculum writers and staff members are gearing up for another summer of meeting the nation’s education challenges in STEM areas head on. The Camp Invention program is no ordinary summer camp; it is a program that gives children nationwide the opportunity to learn more about math and science in a fun and supportive environment. Children are immersed in a week long experience, where the fun of imaginative play leads them through inquiry-based activities in STEM areas, as well as in history and the arts.

Renowned for the opportunity it extends to elementary-aged children to explore the unknown, tinker with ideas, and satisfy an innate sense of curiosity, the Camp Invention program has provided a safe, creative outlet for them to experience extended summer learning taught by familiar local educators for more than two decades. Each day, children rotate through five integrated modules that employ creative thinking to solve real-world challenges. Working together, they learn vital 21st century life skills such as problem solving and teamwork through hands-on activities designed to be informative and fun. Since its inception in 1990, Camp Invention, the premier program of the nonprofit Invent Now Kids, has grown to include nearly 1,500 sites in 49 states.

Oliver Ford Lincoln Mercury's Drive One 4UR School Event - Results

The recent Drive One 4UR School fundraiser sponsored by Oliver Ford Lincoln Mercury and Ford Motor Co. raised $6000 for Plymouth High School Athletic Boosters Club. Ford donated $20 for each person who drove one of the vehicles in its current lineup. Over 300 members of the community participated in the unique event held May 1st in the PHS parking lot.

“We were thrilled with the turnout from the community and glad we could give the donation,” said Jennifer Houin, Vice President at Oliver Ford. “Our sports program faces financial challenges just like every school does these days, and we know this money will be put to good use. And we just got word that we’ve been selected to have a second event to raise more money for the school. It will be Saturday August 7th at Plymouth High School and this time we’re raising funds for the Music Boosters. We’re looking forward to working with Bryan Ames and all the supporters at PHS.”

“Drive One 4 UR School is an excellent program and I am so glad Oliver Ford was able to help our community and school system, “ said Roy Benge, Athletic Director at Plymouth High School. “We thank Ford Motor Company tremendously for giving schools across the country such a great opportunity.”

This is the second year the dealership has brought the promotion to Plymouth The opportunity was made possible because Oliver Ford Lincoln Mercury has --- for the 10th time --- earned Ford Motor Company’s President’s Award for Customer Satisfaction. Established in 1955, the dealership is in its third generation of family ownership.

PHS Distinguished Alumni Hall of Fame Award Winner

The 29th Plymouth High School Distinguished Alumni Hall of Fame Award was presented at the Plymouth High School Alumni Banquet held on Friday, June 18th.

Recipient of the award is Michael E. MacLain, Class of 1980.



Michael E. MacLain is an officer in the United States Air Force Nurse Corps. He has been married to his wife Michelle since May of 1990. They have two sons: Eric, born in 1993 and Sean, born in 1995. Michael credits his success to his days at Plymouth High School and the benefit of great leaders he had as a student and as an athlete, strengthened by the love and support from his family and friends for which he is eternally grateful.

Michael was born in Plymouth, Indiana on March 11, 1962 to Hughie and Rose MacLain and was the last of six children to graduate from Plymouth. During his time at P.H.S., he was a member of the 1977 AA State Championship Football Team and was a three sport varsity letter winner in football, wrestling and baseball, receiving First Team All-Conference honors in football and baseball. Michael graduated from Plymouth High School in 1980. He went on to play NCAA Division II football at Franklin College of Indiana and was an integral part in two Heartland Collegiate Conference Championships. He continued his football career at Manchester College where he garnered Most Valuable Player Honors and was named to the NAIA Division II All-American Football Team as a defensive back.

His military career began in January of 1988 when he enlisted in the United States Air Force as a Nurse Corps Medical Technician. He was assigned to Air University Regional Hospital at Maxwell Air Force Base in Montgomery, Alabama and remained stationed there until July 1993.
Returning with his family to Tennessee, Michael enrolled in Lincoln Memorial University’s School of Nursing and graduated in 1996. He worked as an Emergency/Trauma Nurse at East Tennessee Children’s Hospital, Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge Tennessee, and The University of Tennessee’s Medical Center at Knoxville.

One day in September, Michael was working the night shift at the University of Tennessee’s Medical Center when an Air Force recruiter brought in his asthmatic daughter to be seen. Recognizing the “recruiting cookie” from his enlisted days, Michael inquired about Air Force nursing needs, thus setting the wheels in motion for returning to active duty and serving his country in a time of great need.

In November 2001, Michael was commissioned as a Captain in the United States Air Force Nurse Corps. After completing Commissioned Officer Training in January 2002, he was assigned to the Emergency Department at Wright Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton, Ohio. He completed a Critical Care Air Transport Team course in 2003 and was deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom as a member of a three person critical care team in 2004 and 2005. In 2005, he completed the Aeromedical Evacuation Flight Nurse course and was reassigned to the 43rd Aeromedical Evacuation Squadron at Pope Air Force Base in Fayetteville, North Carolina. He was again called to action in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom, Operation Enduring Freedom and the Horn of Africa as the leader of an Aeromedical Evacuation Team in 2006, 2007 and 2008. Michael has logged over 1100 hours, has been involved in over 250 sorties, and has provided outstanding medical care to over one thousand seriously injured or ill military members. In January of 2009, he was appointed as the Flight Commander of Air Crew Training for ninety assigned aircrew members. He was then promoted to the Field Grade Officer Rank of Major in August of 2009.

Raising ISTEP Scores at Riverside Intermediate

The administrators at Riverside Intermediate School challenged the students to increase ISTEP scores. Mr. John Premetz, a fifth grade teacher volunteered to shave his head. Amy Patton, a community supporter was happy to assist.

Riverside celebrated raising 5th Grade Social Studies, 6th Grade Science, 6th Grade Language Arts, and 5th and 6th Grade Math.

PHS - Summer Weight Training Program

Below you will find the Summer Weight Training Program Calendar. We have several sessions in order to try to meet the needs of as many student athletes as possible; hopefully one of them will work for you.

This summer it will be necessary for us to collect a $20 fee from each student who participates in the program. This fee will cover the costs of maintaining our facility and the services provided throughout the summer. Fees will be collected on the first day (June 7).

PHS - National Honor Society - Teacher of the Year

On Sunday, May 23, 2010, the Plymouth High School National Honor Society named Josh Martin as "Teacher of the Year". Mr. Martin has been teaching English at Plymouth High School since 2004. Mr. Martin is also the head coach of the boys soccer team for Plymouth High School.

PEA Scholarship Recipients

Plymouth Community School Corporation would like to thank Plymouth Education Association for their hard work and dedication to students by raising money to give Danielle Lenne, Cayla Sharp, and Kayla Vanlue each a $1,300.00 scholarship so can continue their education to become teachers.

PHS Academic Super Bowl Team Results

Plymouth's Academic Super Bowl teams competed in the Area Competition at North Judson on April 20th.

English Team - 1st place
Math Team - 1st place
Science Team - 1st place
Social Studies Team - 2nd place
Fine Arts Team - 3rd place
Interdisciplinary Team - 3rd place

The English Team's score of 20/25 tied with the 5th highest score in our division in the entire state. The top five teams from each division compete at the state competition; however, the English Team did not qualify due to the tie breaker.

PHS - Senior Directed One-Act Performances

This Saturday, May 22, 2010, the PHS Acting class will be holding the 14th annual Senior Directed One-Act Competition.

Five One-Acts will be presented throughout the afternoon, with awards afterwards. The performances will be in the PHS Studio Theatre, just behind the auditorium, and are FREE. (There will be a "good will" offering box to help offset the cost of awards.)

Please come to see as many of the shows as you can. The shows are 25-30 minutes each with a 10 minute break between each for set changes. This way the audience can also come and go as they wish.

Upcoming Sports Physicals for Grades 7-12

The Plymouth High School along with several local doctors will be offering sports physicals for athletes entering grades 7-12 at Plymouth High School on Tuesday, July 6, (females) and Wednesday, July 7, (males) starting at 5:00 p.m.

The cost will be $20.00.

Parents & athletes need to pick up their physical forms at the junior high or high school. All forms need to be filled out and signed by their parents in order to receive the physical.

Other Conference Notes

Stefan Baird won Plymouth High School’s first Business Professionals of America National Championship in Payroll Accounting. Stefan was also a National Finalist in his other competitive event, Spreadsheet Analysis. Overall in two years as a BPA member, Stefan won a National Championship, finished as a National Finalist in two other events, and finished in the Top 18 in another.

Gage Egierski advanced to National Leadership Conference for the second year in a row, having a very strong performance in 2010. Gage could not attend the 2009 NLC due to a scheduling conflict.

Kaitlyn Brettin advanced to National Leadership Conference for the second time in three years.
Kaitlyn finished in the Top 17 both appearances, with a Top 14 finish in 2010.

6 PHS National Qualifiers finished in the Top 14, capping off a very strong NLC performance and the most successful BPA year in PHS history.

Purdue Dean of Agriculture visits Plymouth High School

Dr. Jay Akridge, Dean of Purdue’s School of Agriculture, took time to meet with Plymouth High School students to discuss opportunities available to them in the Agricultural Sciences. He stressed the importance of skills learned in the classroom as well as extra-curricular programs like 4-H and FFA.

The Agriculture field is ripe with opportunities for students in Food Science, Plant Sciences, Bio-chemical Engineering, Forestry and Land Management, and various aspects of Farm Management and Production Farming. There are more jobs than graduates in most of the programs and this trend is growing, providing a bright future for those who prepare themselves to enter this field.

Huge Garage Sale on PHS Stage

This Saturday is the (annual spring fund raiser for speech/theatre/broadcasting) HUGE garage sale on the PHS stage... from 7:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. The stage will be full of treasures! If you are out and about on Saturday, please stop by and see what we have to sell! If you know anyone who loves garage sales, please spread the word! We want lots of people here on Saturday!! Riverside Intermediate Staff Talent Show

The Riverside Staff is putting on a Talent Show to raise funds for the school. The event will take place on Friday, May 21, 2010 at 7:00 p.m. in the Riverside Intermediate Gym. You won't want to miss seeing some of your favorite people displaying their many talents on stage...and live!

This show was requested by our PTO, so we consider it a command performance!! For $2.00 you will enjoy an evening of laughter while supporting a worthy cause.

We're also having a Walleye Fish Sandwich fundraiser in advance of the show....just like at the Blueberry Festival! All tickets purchased by May 14th will provide additional funds for our school. Sandwiches are $6 each. Additional food items will also be for sale.

PHS Musical "Oliver"

The PHS Fine Arts Department invites you to join us for an evening of entertainment as we present this year's musical, Oliver.

The two shows will be Friday, May 7 and Saturday, May 8, in the PHS Auditorium. The shows start at 7:30 PM each evening and the auditorium doors will open at 7:00 PM each evening for general seating.

All tickets are $7.00.

We have over 100 PHS students involved in the show with parts as singers and dancers, in the orchestra, and working backstage as crew. We hope to see you at the show!

Plymouth Rewarded for Support of Music

This week the American Music Conference and NAMM announced the winners of the 11th annual "Best Communities in America for Music Education" and Plymouth was selected as one of two communities from Indiana. West Lafayette was the other.

This is the first time Plymouth has ever received this award. Some of our "high marks" for receiving this award were listed as following:

* ENCORE promotes Fine Arts in Plymouth
*Strong music classes offered in grades 6-12
*HS Band earning a 7th consecutive "All-Music Award" from ISSMA for receiving Gold Awards at every ISSMA event for the school year
*HS Band winning a state championship this winter
*HS Band, Choir and Orchestra working as a "team" effort and combining forces at music events to promote the overall program
*Active music boosters program that raises additional necessary funds
*Youth programs (PCYO) funded through community and grant funding

LJH English Academic Super Bowl Team

The Lincoln Junior High Academic Super Bowl Team participated in the annual Indiana Academic Competition this past Saturday, and the English team brought home the state title, while the Science team finished 7th in the state.

The English team, including Ellen Smith, Jamie Cook, Deborah Anders, Shelby Harrell, John Howard, David Walsh, and John Stillson, correctly answered 23 out of 25 questions. The questions all pertained to this year’s theme: An American Generation: 1964 – 1980. The team had to read a collection of literature from that era, including, among others, Paul Zindel’s The Pigman and The Effect of Gamma Rays on Man-in-the-Moon Marigolds, Fiddler on the Roof, Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” Speech, “Caged Bird” by Maya Angelou, “Cinderella” by Anne Sexton, and “Rain on the Scarecrow” by John Mellencamp. Not only did the team post the highest score in their state class, but they posted a higher score than all other teams in all four classes.

The Science team, including Kyle Barry, Rachel Hartman, Alex Jeffirs, Savannah Mae, Matt Pearson, and Janessa Salazar correctly answered 16 out of 25 questions. They studied scientific issues, including space and underwater exploration and the development of personal computers, that pertained to the same era in history. Congratulations to our future writers and scientists!

OLIVER FORD - DRIVE ONE 4UR SCHOOL

On Saturday, May 1st, Oliver Ford along with the PHS Athletic Dept. and the PHS Athletic Booster Club will again sponsor the Drive One 4uR School. The event will be May 1st from 10:00 am - 3:00 pm at the PHS parking lot in front of the Rockpile. Every 5 minute driving test will pay PHS $20.00. 300 drivers is all that is needed. Requirements are - must be 18, valid driver's license and limited to one test drive per household. If we get 300 valid drivers, Oliver Ford will kick in another $500.00.


Along with the Drive One 4uR School fundraiser, the cheerleaders will be selling raffle tickets for an IPOD touch, nano, shuffle, Gateway netbook, and a big BBQ grill (donated by Oliver Ford). Raffle tickets are $1.00 each or 6 for $5.00. Drawing for the raffle will be May 1st. Raffle tickets can be bought from any PHS cheerleader, in the PHS athletic office or Oliver Ford.

SCILL Center - Student of the Month

The SCILL Center is pleased to announce the Student-of-the-Month recipients for the month of March.

Robert Davis from North Judson-San Pierre High School and Cody Hamman (pictured above) from Plymouth High School were the AM class recipients of the award. Vance Rosentreter from Oregon-Davis High School and Laban Schmidt from Knox High School were the PM class recipients of the award.

The Student-of-the-Month is chosen by the AutoTech instructors, Rodney Dawson and Mark Anderson, based on the student’s test scores, class participation, attitude, attendance and initiative in the shop.

Project Based Learning

Sixth graders at Riverside celebrated their Science unit on predators with an Earth Day project. The students participated in researching the mustard plant that is taking over plant growth in 30 states. They collaborated with the local park and learned that this plant is choking out other plant growth in our park.

For Earth Day, teams of sixth grade students pulled more than 100 loaded garbage bags of this predator plant out of the local park. This project was sponsored by a grant that teachers Tillie Kain and Sue Turpin obtained and is a featured portion of a national project working to eradicate this plant in 30 states.

PHS Concert Bands

The PHS Symphonic Band and Wind Ensemble both attended the annual Indiana State School Music Association's concert band competition.

Both of the Plymouth High School concert bands earned the top rating from all three judges for an overall placement of a Gold Award rating!

The Symphonic Band also earned an additional Gold Award rating in the sight-reading portion of the contest.

This event was the final qualification for Plymouth H.S. to receive the ISSMA "All-Music Award" reserved only for programs that earn Gold Ratings in every ISSMA event for the entire school year (Marching Band, Jazz Contest, State Solo and Ensemble contest, and Concert Band Contest). This will be the 7th consecutive year that PHS has earned this award!

Jefferson School

Saturday night a tree near Jefferson Elementary Schools was hit by lightening. A gas line was damaged. NIPSCO was on the scene immediately and repaired the gas leak. Thanks to NIPSCO, David Schoof, and Bruce Johnson, we will have school on Monday.

LJH Academic Super Bowl Results

Congratulations to our Lincoln Junior High Academic Super Bowl teams. They brought home the championship plaque from the NELMS conference meet on Thursday night in a hard fought battle beating Warsaw Edgewood by one point. Each team did its part in the run for the title. The English and science teams finished in first place for their competitions. The math team finished a strong second, missing only one question, and the social studies team came in third.

We are very proud of their efforts.

Operation Leadership

On March 31st, students in the Operation Leadership had the pleasure of listening to guest speakers from our community talk about what it takes to be an effective leader.

Greg Compton, John Oliver, Jack Davis, Jessica Oliver, Laurie Sutter, Francis Ellert and Senator Ed Charbonneau all presented personal insight and experiences to the students.

Kindergarten Round-Up

Since non-resident students now can attend Plymouth Community School Corporation (PCSC) with no tuition, PCSC will host the annual Kindergarten Round-up on April 15, 2010 in all Plymouth Elementary Schools. Parents are invited to bring their children to Plymouth.

Resident parents should attend their specific school district round-up. Non-resident parents may attend the round-up at any of the four Plymouth Elementary Schools; however, their child may be placed at another Plymouth School to balance class size.

There will be two sessions. Parents and children need only attend one session. The 1st session is at 1:30 p.m. The 2nd session is at 6:00 p.m. Each session should last no longer than one hour.

Please bring an original copy of your child’s birth certificate, immunization records, and a social security number. The schools will make copies of the originals. For Spanish speaking Kindergartners and parents, interpreters will be available. During the hour-long Round-Up, parents will meet with administrators and fill out registration forms; children will meet with Kindergarten teachers for screening.

In order to be eligible for Round-Up this year, your child needs to be 5 years old on or before August 1, 2010.

For those unsure of which building their child will attend, please call (574) 936-3115 and ask for the transportation department.

PHS Distinguished Alumni Award

Nominations are now being accepted at Plymouth High School and until April 17, 2010, for the PHS Distinguished Alumni Hall of Fame Award which will be presented at the 2010 Alumni Association Banquet on June 18, 2010.

After all nominations are received, the committee will review the nominations and select a PHS alumnus who has made a significant contribution in his/her field or has been of exceptional service to his/her profession either locally, statewide, and/or nationally.

A nomination form may be obtained at PHS, Marshall County Historical Society, WTCA, Plymouth Library, Chamber of Commerce, Marshall County Convention and Tourism Bureau or from any committee member.

Past Recipients of PEA Scholarships

My name is Beth Garrity and I am a senior at Taylor University this year. I am majoring in Elementary Education and Special Education and will graduate this spring. I graduated from Plymouth High School in 2006. That spring I was the recipient of a PEA Scholarship. I just wanted to thank everyone who participates in the ticket sales for the PEA Chicken Dinner which helped me attend college. I have gotten to attend an amazing university that, I think, has prepared me well for my future. I am currently student teaching at Webster Elementary in Mrs. Houin's third grade classroom. Thank you for helping make my dreams of being a teacher a reality.

Geoff Scheetz was the recipient of a PEA scholarship in 2005. Geoff is teaching at Jefferson School this year. He was hired to teach third grade and second grade for teachers on leave.

Megan Barker teaches kindergarten at Menominee School. She is our third recipient of a PEA scholarship.

We are fortunate to have these three PHS graduates working for the Plymouth Schools.

The Plymouth Education Association (PEA) sponsors an annual Nelson’s Port-a-Pit Chicken and Bake Sale as a non-profit fundraiser to award scholarships to PHS seniors pursuing a degree in education. Our chicken and bake sale will be Friday, April 9th. Tickets are on now on sale.
Tickets are being sold by 138 members.

Northwest Indiana NFL National Qualification Tournament Results

The Speech Team hosted the Northwest Indiana NFL National Qualification tournament here at PHS over the weekend.

Numerous individuals had outstanding days advancing to semi-final and final rounds. Plymouth also saw several students qualify for the national tournament in June. Jon Tyree qualified in Drama. Andy Langdon and Sam Compton qualified in Humor. Patrick Felke qualified in International Extemp. Bryt Hiatt qualified in USA Extemp. Zach Wendt and Nick Houin as well as Cam Robertson and Katie Morrow qualified in Duo. Jon, Andy, and Cam also qualified in other events at the tournament but are only allowed to attend nationals in one.

Congratulations to all! Now, let's get ready to bring home another state championship!

State Champion Winter Performance

The PHS Winter Performance Ensemble (winter guard and winter drumline) had a GREAT weekend!

The PHS band department won its first-ever state championship this weekend at the I.H.S.C.G.A. Class 3A State Finals hosted at Franklin Central High School in Indianapolis.

Plymouth had to compete against 35 other high schools (nearly 4 hours of non-stop competition). Plymouth achieved an almost unheard of CLEAN SWEEP of every judge on the panel (total of 6 judges in 12 categories). Plymouth placed 1st (out of all 36 schools involved) in every single category at the event!

This is the first state championship the band department has ever earned and also the first time in PHS history that a group from Plymouth earned an additional Gold Rating at this event.

The same day, the winter drumline performed at the I.P.A. State Prelims at Avon High School competing against 20 other high schools. Plymouth had a GREAT performance at this event and also advanced to the state finals for the first time ever in Class 2A! The I.P.A. state finals will be this coming weekend at Ben Davis High School.

This year PHS finished third, behind only Pike and Lake Central. The 2010 State Leadership Conference has been the most successful SLC in PHS history. PHS is a sending a school record 10 members to National Leadership Conference.

School Reach Test Reminder

This Sunday, March 14, 2010, at 7:00 p.m. Plymouth Community Schools will test their new Emergency Notification Telephone Service to parents called School Reach.

The message from the superintendent of schools will be sent in both Spanish and English. This past weekend six members of the Plymouth Wrestling Club participated in the Indiana State Wrestling Association (ISWA) Tournament at the Ben Davis High School in Indianapolis.

Menominee Elementary Kindergarten (Ms. Barker) student, David Hunsberger (6 yrs), finished the 2010 season with a state title. He brought home a first place win by defeating his opponents with 2 pins and 2 decisions. Hunsberger is the son of David and Katie Hunsberger.

Spelling Bee Finalist

Richard (Ricky) Cooper III, a sixth grade student at Riverside Intermediate School in Plymouth, was the third place finisher in the Notre Dame Spelling Bee that was held at the Hammes Bookstore on Saturday, March 6th.

The competition lasted more than three hours and featured about 50 northern Indiana students in grades 4 through 6. As the third place finisher, Ricky received a trophy, a football, and tickets to the Blue/Gold game at Notre Dame.

Season Tickets holders - Tickets will go on sale from 5:00 – 6:30 PM
in the athletic hallway. Everyone must pick up their own tickets.

Thursday, March 11,
Non season ticket holders 8:00 – 4:00 PM.

Seats for the regional will not be reserved.

Sectional Tournament Results

I had the pleasure to attend two Plymouth High School Sectional Tournaments this weekend.

The first was the Basketball Sectional. For coach Kevin Stuckmeyer, it was his first sectional championship and hopefully to be followed by many more. For the players, they played hard and represented Plymouth High School like we would expect them to. They lived up to the legacy left by many sectional champions before them and will take that legacy to Chesterton High School next weekend to face Gary Lew Wallace for a shot at the semi-state basketball tournament.

The second was the Speech Sectional. For veteran coach Dave McKenzie, it was his tenth in a row since moving to Plymouth. Once again, the well-dressed and articulate students represented Plymouth High School like we would expect them to. They also lived up to the legacy left by sectional champions from the last three decades. They will take this legacy to the District Speech Tournament this Saturday at Plymouth High School where students will be competing for a shot at the National Speech Tournament.

The PHS Jazz Ensembles competed in the ISSMA Jazz Competition this weekend at LaPorte High School.

PHS Winter Drumline and Color Guard

Congratulations to the PHS Winter Drumline and Color Guard. The group won their first-ever championship this weekend at the I.P.A. tournament hosted by Warsaw. Groups from across Northern Indiana competed at the event and PHS came out on top!

The team will now compete at the State Preliminaries this coming weekend at Avon High School. Only 7 schools in the state will advance to the State Finals event on March 20th.

State Wrestling Results

Damon Howe, a Plymouth High School Junior, placed 5th in the State Individual Wrestling Tournament in Indianapolis.

Riverside 5th Grade Basketball Results

The 5th grade Riverside Rockets A team won the Riverside Tournament last Saturday defeating Knox in the championship game 34-13.

To get to the championship, the Lady Rockets beat Argos 19-15. Nicole Horvath lead the team with 17 points, Ashley Harrell added 12 points. Victoria Styers had 9 points, Destiny Schoff had 6 points, Brittani Splix had 4 points, Erin Hunter had 2 points, and Lanae Singleton had 3 points.

The Lady Rockets are 8-0 on the season!

PHS Results at the ASCE Bridge Bust Competition at Purdue

On Monday, March 1, 2010, 22 Plymouth students competed at the 33rd Annual ASCE Bridge Bust Competition at Purdue. There were 11 schools that brought teams to the competition for a total of 66 bridges. Bridges were judged in two categories: Aesthetics and Structural Efficiency. Clay Hilliard - State Elk's Hoop Shoot Contest Winner

Clay Hilliard, a 3rd grade student at Webster Elementary, has now won the local, regional, and State Elk's Hoop Shoot Contest!

He has made 23 of 25 free throws in both the regional and State. He now advances to the Midwest competition between Ohio, Michigan, and Indiana which will be held in Angola, Indiana.

Immunization Clinic - Riverside Intermediate

In 2010-2011, the State of Indiana school immunization requirements will change for students entering the 6th thru 12th grade. In anticipation of these changes, the Marshall County Health Department will be hosting a FREE IMMUNIZATION CLINIC for Riverside students only at Riverside Intermediate School on March 17, 2010. Notification was sent home with students who will be needing immunizations. Parents need not be present, but signed permission forms must be returned prior to the clinic. All parents are encouraged to take advantage of this onsite clinic in order to avoid the rush before school starts in August.

New requirements are:
Tdap ( Tetanus, diptheria, and pertussis) must be given after the tenth birthday
Menactra ( Meningitis)
Two Varicella (chickenpox) or written date of disease.

They will offer Hep B and IPV if necessary.

The PHS band participated in the ISSMA Solo and Ensemble State Finals this past weekend at North Central High School in Indianapolis, Indiana.

PHS had 32 students that advanced to the state tournament.

LJH - Winter Guard

The newly formed Lincoln Jr. High School Winter Guard had their first-ever competition this weekend. The Lincoln Guard did an outstanding job representing Plymouth at the event! The guard earned a high enough score to place as a Silver Medalist.

Marshall County Reading Council Young Author's Essay Contest

Grade 5 and Grade 6 students participated in the Marshall County Reading Council Young Authors’ Essay Contest. The topic for the 25th Anniversary contest was: 25 Years into the Future.

Riverside Student Receives Writing Award

Quentin Gawronski, son of Kristy and Joel Gawronski of Plymouth, was recently notified that he is a winner in a state writing contest promoting disability awareness.

The contest is sponsored each year by the United Cerebral Palsy Association of Greater Indiana, Inc. Quentin has been invited to a special award dinner in Indianapolis where he will receive a cash prize.

He is a sixth grader at Riverside Intermediate school and learned of the contest from his teacher, Mrs. Sharon Scott.

Riverside 5th Grade Recorder Pep Band

The 5th grade Recorder Pep Band, under the direction of music teacher, Mrs. Jamie Briles, performed during the 5th grade girls' basketball game at Riverside Intermediate School on February 25th after school.

The Rockets school spirit was evident everywhere!

7th Grade Girls Basketball Results

The Lincoln Jr. High 7th grade girls A team won the Benjamin Franklin (Valparaiso) Middle School Tournament on Saturday. The girls won their first game over Grimmer Middle School 23-13. Kirstin Riise lead the team with eight points Hunter Stevens had six points and Haley Harrell had 5 points. Kylee Rippy added four points. Kaydon Folser and Emily Trump added some key defensive minutes. Abby Patrick, Carly Berger and Libbie Portteus did a great job rebounding for the team.

For the championship game, the girls played Ben Franklin Middle School and won 22-14. Hunter Stevens lead the team with ten points. Haley Harrell had five points, Kirstin Riise had four points and Kylee Rippy added three points. Allie Wright had some key defensive stops throughout the game.

Riverside 5th Grade Girls Basketball Team Results

The girls 5th grade A basketball team won the North Liberty Tournament last Saturday beating LaVille 18-10. To get to the championship, the ladies defeated North Liberty 20-2. All the girls contributed both offensively and defensively in the two big wins! The Lady Rockets are 4-0 on the year. The A team consists of Hanna Hopple, Miranda Southwell, Destiny Schoff, Lanae Singleton, Ashley Harrell, Rachel Hilty, Nicole Horvath, Kennedy Snyder, Erin Hunter, Brittani Splix, Maddie Samuelson, Alli Dennie, and Victoria Styers. The 5th grade girls B Team finished second in the North Liberty Tournament, losing 14-12 in the final seconds of the championship game. The 3-1 Lady Rockets came from behind to make it the most hard fought game of the year. The B Team consists of Alaysha Jackson, Victoria Leazenby, Mackenzie Derifield, Shania Northern, Amber Blissmer, Cassie McPherron, Lexie Stein, Sierra Strickland, Courtney Bradley, Destinee Hartwig, Zoe Keilman, Madison Stevens, and Haley McFarland.
